Joe Biden should pick Stacey Abrams to be his running mate
If I had Joe Biden’s ear, I’d tell him to ask Stacey Abrams to join him on the road to the White House. Picking Abrams to be the Democratic nominee for vice-president is the right thing to do right now for the country and it’s also the best way to beat Donald Trump on November 3rd.
An objective review of American history shows us that African-Americans have never been treated equally in this country. For a large part of our history, around 250 years, they weren’t even treated as human beings. Even after the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation, African-Americans were treated as second-class citizens. In many respects, they still are. The latest evidence of that was the murder of George Floyd by a group of police officers in Minneapolis earlier this year. The video of the white police officer jamming his knee down on the neck of a defenseless African-American set off a wave of protests that has forced everyone in this country to think about who we are and what we want this country to be about.
Floyd pleaded for mercy by telling the officers that he couldn’t breathe. He even cried out for his mother who had already passed away. They ignored his pleas and he died at their hands. The protestors who have taken to the streets following Floyd’s death are asking to be heard. Instead of ignoring them or attacking them for speaking out, the government and all of us as citizens should be listening to them and supporting them. We should use our voices to elevate theirs.
Biden has said that he will choose a woman to be his running mate. The fact of the matter is that there are many women who would make a good running mate and a good vice president. Any one of them would be an improvement over the current occupant of that office. But, in consideration of our country’s history and where we are today, now is the time to elevate the voices of African-Americans and all of those who have been abused, mistreated, and ignored by picking an African-American female to be the nominee for the second-highest office in the land. Specifically, picking Abrams would show everyone in the country that the Biden administration is going to be progressive, inclusive, and transformative.
The Trump administration has been destructive and divisive from Day 1. To use one of Trump’s favorite words, his presidency has been a “disaster” in every way. For the sake of our country and the future of our democracy, it is imperative that Biden and his chosen running mate defeat Trump and Mike Pence in November. It’s not an exaggeration to say that our democracy could be irretrievably broken and our people irreconcilably divided.
The way to beat Trump in November is with people power. We need people who don’t usually vote to make themselves heard at the ballot box. We need to build a diverse coalition of forward thinkers who will join together now, vote together in November, and stay together during the process of undoing the damage of the Trump administration. The only way that’s going to happen is if minorities believe that Biden is going to be a changemaker. Having Abrams on the ticket will show them that he is serious about what he says in his speeches and that he will have someone by his side who can be a voice for those who have traditionally been ignored.
Abrams has already proven that she has the political skills to succeed under adverse conditions. In 2018 she would’ve beaten Brian Kemp in the race for governor of Georgia had it not been for voting irregularities. Most political observers would never have thought that an African-American female would ever have a chance at becoming governor of a conservative southern state like Georgia. Since 2018, she has used her name recognition and appeal to draw attention to voting rights and civil rights matters. Abrams is a household name who is widely respected and admired. She is highly educated and has had successful careers in the private sector and in public life. .As a candidate, she has few flaws and many strengths. Adding Abrams to the ticket would increase interest in the election among women, minorities and young people and give Biden an immediate shot of momentum.
If Biden is going to win in November and have the chance to “restore the soul of America’’ then he is going to have to broaden his base and bring as many people in the fold as possible. Joe Biden’s prospects of defeating Donald Trump and moving America forward will greatly improve if he chooses Stacey Abrams to be the next Vice President of the United States.
